Esa-Pekka Salonen at Salzburg Festival, BBC Proms and Edinburgh Festival

Esa-Pekka Salonen will be conducting the Vienna Philharmonic and the Concert Association of the Vienna State Opera Chorus in a production of Janá?ek’s “The Makropulos Affair” at the Salzburg Festival. The five performances on 10, 13, 18, 25, 30 August will be directed by Christoph Marthaler. Janá?ek’s opera is based on a play by Czech writer Carel Capek about the human dream of eternal youth and eternal life.

Together with his Philharmonia Orchestra London, Esa-Pekka Salonen will be guest at the BBC Proms on 17 August and at the Edinburgh International Festival on 23 August. The programme in London will feature works by Russian composers Shostakovich, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky with Lisa Batiashvili playing Shostakovich’s violin concerto No. 1. In Edinburgh, the orchestra will present Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring”, Scriabin’s “Poem of Ecstasy” and “Shéhérazade” by Ravel with mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor.
