Holst The Planets
Talbot World, Stars, Systems, Infinity
Step inside one of the most popular pieces of classical music, Holst’s The Planets, with the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen.
Paul Rissmann leads an afternoon’s musical journey through Holst’s astrological portrait of 8 planets, including Mars (God of War), Jupiter (Bringer of Jollity) and Venus (Goddess of Love), together with Joby Talbot’s new companion piece Worlds, Stars, Systems, Infinity. In the first half of the concert Paul, Salonen and the Orchestra explore the piece from the inside out, using large-screen projection, musical demonstrations and interviews to bring it to life.
In the second half Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts a full-scale performance of The Planets, culminating in the world première of Joby Talbot’s music. A rare opportunity to see into the heart of a great classic, equally suitable for the seasoned concert-goer or the uninitiated.
